SUPPLIES YOU NEED
• 1 white handkerchief (Hank)
• 2 GLASS jars
• Hypo Clearing Agent used in Photo Developing (JESUS)
• Iodine Solution (SIN)
• Water
• Labels or markers (WORKS, JESUS, SIN)
PREP BEFORE TEACHING
1. WORKS Jar:
• Clear water
• This represents our “good works” — looks helpful but cannot clean sin.
2. JESUS Jar:
• Fill with water and add a small amount of hypo clearing agent
3. Practice the reaction once so you know how strong it is and how fast it works.
++REMEMBER TO WASH JARS AND RESET AFTER EACH DEMO++
STEP BY STEP DEMONSTRATION
1. Introduce Hank
Hold up the clean handkerchief.
“Meet Hank! He’s just like us — he has a life, a personality, dreams, and choices to make.”
Ask kids fun questions:
• What’s Hank’s favorite color?
• What school does he go to?
• What’s his favorite snack?
Make him feel like a real person.
2. Show How Sin Stains Us (Iodine)
Ask kids for examples of sin:
• Lying
• Sneaking
• Being mean
• Disobeying parents
• Saying ugly words
Hank gets dirtier with each “choice.”
Verse: Romans 3:23 — “All have sinned…”
3. Hank Tries Good Works (WORKS jar)
“Hank wants to go to Heaven, so he decides to do GOOD WORKS to fix his sin.”
Ask kids for examples
• Sharing
• Cleaning
• Going to church
• Being nice
• Helping others
Dip Hank in the WORKS jar.
The water gets dirty — the sin stays.
“Good works are wonderful, but they can’t wash away sin.”
Verse: Ephesians 2:8–9 — “Not of works…”
4. Hank Meets Jesus (JESUS jar)
Show the JESUS jar.
Tell the gospel simply:
“Jesus never sinned. He died and rose again so He could wash us clean.”
Dip Hank in the JESUS jar — he turns white again.
Verse: Isaiah 1:18 — “Though your sins be as scarlet…”
5. Hank Lives for Jesus
Now dip the clean Hank back into the WORKS jar.
The dirty water turns clear.
“When Jesus changes our heart, even our good works look different — they shine for Him!”
